McFLY – one of the biggest pop bands to come out of the UK – are set to play in Whitehaven.

Organisers of this year’s Whitehaven Festival have pulled off one of their biggest triumphs so far in the event’s 14-year history.

They’ve played to sell-out crowds of tens of thousands all over the world and on Friday, June 21, McFly will perform on Whitehaven’s harbourside.

The award-winning band will belt out hits such as Room On The 3rd Floor, Obviously, Five Colours in her Hair, All About You, Transylvania, Party Girl and Star Girl.

Tickets – priced £39.99 (no booking fee) – will be on sale from today (Thursday) and are expected to sell quickly. They are only available online from www.richardsonsofwhitehaven.co.uk

Chief festival organiser Gerard Richardson said there had been a lot of discussion before finally clinching the deal. “I’m delighted it’s come to fruition – we started negotiations last October. The more in demand a band are, the harder it is to get them. We took a real gamble but it paid off and shows good things are worth waiting for,” he said.

The multi-million-record selling band consists of Tom Fletcher, Danny Jones, Dougie Poynter and Harry Judd, who say they are looking forward to the up-close-and-personal gig. They told The Whitehaven News: “We are delighted to be able to add the Whitehaven Festival to our gigs this summer. We have never played West Cumbria but we know they like their music events up there and it’s always great to play a new gig.

“We will be doing all our greatest hits and it will be a great gig.”

As well as their outstanding pop success, individually they have also been hitting the headlines. Drummer Harry was voted the winner of the BBC’s Strictly Come Dancing in 2011 and in the same year Dougie won I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out of Here.

This year the band are playing their Memory Lane: The Best Of Tour 2013 across the UK.

Copeland Council leader Elaine Woodburn said this week: “The festival continues to draw some fantastic musical talent to Whitehaven each year, and this year’s line-up is even better. The teenager in me cannot wait to welcome McFly to Whitehaven, and as much as I pretend this won’t happen, I know I’ll be at the front dancing along with everyone else!

“I congratulate the Whitehaven Festival team, once again, for their hard work and commitment, which has once again proved successful.”

The annual event’s main sponsors are Britain’s Energy Coast (BEC), Nuclear Management Partners (NMP) and the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA).

The McFly gig will be all-standing and there will be a support band on the night.

The harbourside arena will once again have a 2,000 capacity and this year, for the first time, the stage will face the sea.

Tickets for the festival’s Saturday night gig featuring Slade, The Sweet and Bruce Foxton’s From The Jam are also on sale from the same website.
