He revealed that he attempted suicide in a fume-filled car before checking into rehab, where he was treated for depression

Tormented McFly star Dougie Poynter told last night how he was driven to the brink of despair by his inner demons.

The I’m A Celeb winner revealed that he attempted suicide in a fume-filled car before checking into rehab, where he was treated for depression.

Singer and bass guitarist Dougie, 24, made the shock confession at a Channel 4 recording of Alan Carr’s Chatty Man – and drew gasps from the audience.

He blurted out his feelings in an emotional interview as Carr asked him about the band’s autobiography, Unsaid Things… Our Story, which includes his bid to kill himself in February 2011.

Dougie told the show he had been in a “really dark” place at the time.

Carr added: “Last time you were on Chatty Man you weren’t yourself.

“Now I realise you were battling drink and drugs. Did you feel better once you wrote about it?”

Dougie replied: “It’s always good to reflect on that sort of stuff. I’m in a really, really good place now. It is quite easy to forget.

“It’s quite therapeutic to go back, quite scary and a bit of an eye opener into how dark it can get if you take your foot off the gas and stop looking after yourself.”

Bandmate Harry Judd added: “Half the time you didn’t know what you were doing – it was us telling you.”

Dougie replied: “Yes, because I was so battered.”

Tom Fletcher said the band didn’t want to hide the truth from fans.

He added: “We are all in good places now. Dougie has sorted himself out and I am married.”

A pal revealed that Dougie spent more than a month in the Priory.

He made a good recovery and went on to win the 11th series of I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out of Here!

The friend said of his suicide bid: “We were all devastated.

“His drinking was out of control and he thought ending it all was the easy and perhaps only option available to him.”

It was designed by a fan but the band loved it so much that they decided to use it as their Best Of McFly album cover

McFly have had a LOT of hits. And because they’re lovely boys, they’ve gathered them all in one place especially for you, on their new album, Memory Lane. It’s the best of McFly (so far, they’re not breaking up or anything) and we can’t wait to hear it. Although, strictly, we’ve already heard it. Because it’s their greatest hits.

The album is out on 26 November, but before that, McFly will release Love Is Easy as a single. They literally filmed the video yesterday, which is exciting.

And before that, they were in Brazil, topless, and played four nights in the US – two in LA, two in New York. And they all sold out. We promise we didn’t buy all of the tickets. Or maybe we did, you’ll never know.

They’ve also been writing songs with One Direction, have a book out tomorrow and they’re probably going to the moon or something too. They’re a busy band.

Piece from Heat Magazine talking about 'Unsaid Things...Our Story'.

McFly's official Twitter tweeted:

"Unsaid Things...Our story - on book shelves from Thurs! Plus pick up a copy of The Sun Thurs/Fri for exclusive extracts."

McFly are to be on ITV1 show “This Morning” this Friday, October 12th. We have no exact time yet but This Morning starts 10:30am and ends 12:30pm, so make sure you tune into ITV1.

They’re also appearing on "Alan Carr Chatty Man"  the same day at 10pm, Channel 4.

"Alan Carr Chatty Man" will be recorded at the ITV Studios tomorrow (Wednesday 10th October) so you can try and go to meet the boys there if you can.

The bass player is a hit with the ladies

As One Direction carry on taking over the planet it’s good to know that our favourite lads McFly are still going on strong.

Harry Styles may be making the most of his new found fame with the ladies, but McFly’s Dougie Poytner is still one of music’s hottest men and his one million twitter followers agree!

”I’m over a million followers? Wow! Awesome. My work here is done. I’m deleting my account,” Poytner tweeted.

Joking with fans he later added: ”You know what’s cooler than a million? A billion!”

It’s been a difficult few years for I’m A Celebrity winner Dougie, who entered rehab in 2011 to deal with his demons but, following McFly’s sold-out tour it seems are on the up for the musician.

Last month McFly thought they’d give him a send-of to remember as they paid tribute to Chris Moyles and his team with a special video during his final breakfast show.

The band performed and recorded a reworked version of their 2006 single ‘Star Girl’ – reworking it as ‘Star Boy’.

The ‘Star Girl’ track was backed by Moyles and has been played on every Friday of his show, as part of their ‘McFlyday’ feature since 2010.
